What is Cervical Cancer?

Uterine sarcoma is a type of cancer that begins in the muscles and supporting tissues of the uterus in women. The most common type of uterine sarcoma happens to be the uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) with the abnormal growth of tumors in the myometrium (muscular wall of the uterus).

Causes

To this day, a direct cause of uterine cancer has not been discovered. Thanks to advanced medical research, doctors and scientists have determined certain risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing uterine cancer. These risk factors will be discussed next.

Symptoms

Many symptoms associated with uterine sarcoma/cancer can be misleading since they can be related to other illnesses such as fibroids or endometrial carcinomas. Therefore, it is encouraged to have routine check-ups to observe any abnormality in the body. Below is a list of a couple of symptoms for uterine sarcomas:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Abnormal and persistent pain during sexual intercourse
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding

Risk factors

Doctors and scientists have discovered that the following risk factors can contribute to an increase in the likelihood of getting uterine cancer:

  • Being of African American descent
  • Any exposure to pelvic radiation

Risk factors can be prevented by adopting a healthier lifestyle which includes daily physical activity, balanced nutrition, a stress-releasing practice, and adequate sleep. By practicing healthier choices, the risk of developing uterine cancer can be reduced.

Prevention

Although there is no absolute way of preventing cancer, getting routine check-ups and screenings will help in reducing the risk of developing cancer. Partaking in daily physical activity, eating wholesome balanced nutrition, and managing stress are some other simple ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle and minimize the risks of cancer attacking the body.
